Westside casino-hotel project in Las Vegas encounters setback as it falls short in essential milestone

The "Jackson Hotel and Harlem Nights Casino" and "Westside Residence" project in Las Vegas' Historic Westside has hit a roadblock. The Las Vegas Planning Commission recently held a heated debate, ultimately deciding not to endorse the development proposal. The commission's vote was 5-1, with Commissioner Louis De Salvio being the lone supporter.

This commission, consisting of six members, evaluates land-use entitlements, like zoning, and offers recommendations to the City Council, which has the final say on a development's progress.

The upcoming City Council meeting on June 18 will delve into this contentious issue once more.

This ambitious project boasts a 207-room hotel, a 336-unit apartment building, and a host of luxurious amenities, including a theater, spa, nightclub, and a 7,000-square-foot casinoโ€”yet it hasn't been able to secure the necessary zoning waiver due to the area's current seven-story height limit. Despite the commission's decision, the developer, Shlomo Meiri, remains optimistic, viewing the project as a potential catalyst for neighborhood growth.

However, the developer must address multiple conditions set by city staff before proceeding, such as acquiring FAA approval and ensuring high-rise fire safety standards are met[2][4]. While community support and opposition have varied, one thing remains certain: the fate of this exciting development now rests with the City Council. Stay tuned for updates!

The casino games and cultural experiences at the proposed Jackson Hotel and Harlem Nights Casino are a significant part of the upcoming development, should it progress in Las Vegas. The 7,000-square-foot casino, a key aspect of the project, remains a potential catalyst for growth in the Historic Westside neighborhood, despite the recent decision by the Las Vegas Planning Commission.
